NMA 2024 Conference in NYC

Anyone that knows me knows I’m at Art and Medicine person as my life is a mixture of both. I do not choose between the two, instead my home, office, soul knows I’m both a creative and a doctor.

When I was younger I wanted to be an artist, specifically a spoken word artist. Before the chemical engineering degree. And before the medical degree. I thought being an artist would be the harder route, STEM was safe lol.

This week I went to New York City for the National Medical Association conference to speak on climate change as a Climate and Health Equity Fellow of the Medical Society Consortium on Climate and Health.

It was an inspiring trip to say the least, professionally and personally. Not only was I rejuvenated by the hundreds of amazing Black doctors supporting, educating, and thriving off each other. I was loved by my aunties in medicine because practicing medicine in Flint has been a lonely journey especially since my private practice Harris Family Health.

And I was passionate about climate change as I’ve grown as an advocate this year as a CHEF fellow. NMA never disappoints and it’s a blessing to be able to be part of the legacy of black excellence in medicine.

But the this trip was more than medicine, it was a muse to my artistic soul which fuels my foundation. We do not have to choose in medicine. We can be our authentic selves.

NYC gave me the desire to create again when I went to The Museum of Modern Art ause I’d distracted myself because the real world can be draining. Thanks to the amazing Dr Shaneeta Johnson for inviting me to see Alicia Keys Hell’s Kitchen musical which was a spectacular and beautiful front row experience of pure happiness.

I’m heading back to Flint with a full heart. Ready to continue to be a great black doctor and creative. I needed this trip more than I thought.
