TWO THINGS you need to have in a GOOD doctor!

Finding the right doctor for you can be a trip. Sometimes their hours or wait times don’t work for your schedule. Sometimes they are not taking new patients. Some times they literally or figuratively don’t speak your language.

BUT there are two things you have to have with a GOOD doctor. Without these two things it is hard to get all of your concerns address thoroughly, effectively, and appropriately.

  1. TRUST

If you don’t trust your doctor you are not going to tell them everything they need to know. Whether it’s you explaining your concern and experiences OR answering the questions to help determine the next steps in the work up or management. There are superficial things that all doctors can do based on very little information. But the unique, personalized, and fine tuned approaches come from more information that usually can only come from YOU. So do you trust your doctor? Do you tell them everything? You should be TMI-ing (to much information-ing) your doctor so they can maximize your care, experiences, and options. If you do not trust your doctor you are not doing your health and legacy any help cause you are leaving unanswered questions and unaddressed medical problems to linger and potentially become worse.

  2. TIME

Having enough time to tell your story and have a discussion with your doctor is one of the most important aspects of good and quality medical care. Time is hard. Because many people, both patients and health professionals, see how the health system is eating at the time patients spend with doctors. It’s getting difficult in many settings to have more than 5 or 10 minutes with your doctor to tell them your concerns. Some people are good at coming back when they have many concerns but sometimes even one concern can take up more time than allowed in the appointment. More information helps make better recommendations. Time is so important because if you do not have enough time to speak to your doctor then some information and care may be delayed. Sometimes this isn’t a big deal but sometimes it can be the different between treatment options, complications, and referrals or surgeries. Find a doctor who is able to provide enough time to discuss and evaluate you fully so all your medical concerns are addressed.

TRUST and TIME are two of the most important things within a good doctor-patient relationship. Without both unfortunately things can be missed or the journey of having everything addressed is usually more difficult. Do you have trust and time with your doctor?
