Asthma and Allergy Advocacy in DC
Today was a great day advocating for patients with Asthma and Allergy through the Allergy and Asthma Day held by the Allergy & Asthma Network on Capitol Hill. Our goal today was to improve health care access and medication affordability, strengthen health equity interventions, and enhance clinical trial diversity.
I was joined by a nurse and mother from Detroit as we told our stories, experiences, and concerns regarding Asthma and Allergy resources, prevention, and management in the US, Michigan, and specifically in Flint and Detroit. We supported the Safe Step Act, HELP Copays Act, EPIPEN Act, Cummings Family Asthma Act, and funding for Asthma and Allergy Programs.
Asthma is not a simple medical problem. It is a chronic lung disease that kills and hospitalizes people every year. In Genesee County and especially Flint , more Blacks die and are hospitalized because of Asthma each year.
Blacks are 5x more likely to visit an ER for Asthma and 3x more likely to die from Asthma. I am thankful to be able to represent Young, Gifted & Green , a national black environmental justice organization because Asthma and Allergies are worsened because of climate change, air pollution, and water contamination.
Thank you to the Congress members and staff that allowed us to share our stories and advocate for Michiganders. We were able to speak with Senator Debbie Stabenow , Congressman Dan Kildee, Representative Haley Stevens and Senator Gary Peters.
